dc.description.abstract | According to Ferreira (2012) the spectral response of a photovoltaic device is its ability
to convert the incident radiation from certain bands of the spectrum in electrical energy.
Therefore, when analyzing the spectral response of a kind of photovoltaic cell, we can
define which range of radiation the photovoltaic cell works most efficiently. If we
analyze the data from ASTM G173-03 (2003), most of the solar radiation that reaches
the Earth's surface is located in the range from 300 nm to 2000 nm. However, this
radiation can vary according to the region, date and time due to several factors, as
shown by Bird (1981). There is equipment, spectrometers, capable of making
measurements to build the spectrum of solar radiation. The objective of this article is
basic and applied research, as well as the concept for the construction of a low-cost
spectrometer, which measures specific ranges of radiation and, based on knowledge
bases, estimates the incident solar radiation spectrum. By way of the proposed
technique in this work, it is possible to reduce the number of analyzed points from the
spectrum and reduce the accuracy of the sensors in order to estimate the solar
spectrum. In other words, there is an exchange between investment in hardware by
applying the knowledge bases. The estimated spectrum can be applied to analyze the
different photovoltaic cell technologies, in order to define which technology is the most
efficient in that location, for a given atmospheric condition.
