Abstract

The objective of this work was to analyze the design of fire protection systems in existing buildings with structural pathologies, emphasizing the search for technical solutions that reconcile current regulatory requirements with the physical, functional, and patrimonial limitations of these constructions. The methodology adopted consisted of a bibliographic review of Brazilian fire safety codes and standards, as well as studies and technical documents related to the applicability of these regulations in old and historical buildings. The analysis shows that, in the Brazilian context, modernization and retrofit projects are frequently limited to formally meeting legal requirements, reproducing prescriptive solutions that do not always reflect the reality of the building or guarantee adequate levels of safety. It is concluded that the adoption of integrative approaches, with emphasis on performance-based methodology and the use of technically justified compensatory measures, is fundamental for the development of more efficient, safe, and compatible fire protection systems that are compatible with the real conditions of existing buildings.
