<description>Percepção sobre meio ambiente por estudantes das séries iniciais do Ensino Fundamental II no município de Barreiros
This study investigated the perception of middle school students about the environment in two schools in Barreiros, Pernambuco, one public and one private. The research aimed to analyze how 6th to 9th grade students understand the concept of environment, its importance, and the extent to which the subject is incorporated into the school curriculum. The methodology involved questionnaires applied to 140 students, whose answers were categorized into three levels (adequate, partially adequate, and inadequate) and comparatively analyzed between the two school contexts. The findings revealed a significant gap in students’ understanding: most were unable to provide definitions consistent with the United Nations (UN) framework and showed limited awareness of the environment’s relevance to sustainability and quality of life. Differences between school systems were also observed, with the subject receiving greater attention in private schools, while in public schools it appeared in a fragmented way. Another key finding was the lack of connection between local environmental issues — such as deforestation, water pollution, and climate vulnerability — and the content taught in classrooms. The study concludes that environmental education must be strengthened through more integrated, participatory, and contextualized pedagogical practices, in order to stimulate student engagement and foster the formation of critical citizens committed to socio-environmental sustainability

<description>Trilha ecológica como prática pedagógica para sensibilização ambiental no IFPE – Campus Barreiros
The Monção ecological trail, located within a fragment of the Atlantic Forest at IFPE – Barreiros Campus, constitutes a pedagogical practice focused on Environmental Education and Agroecology, integrating teaching, research, and extension activities. Conducted since 2014, the trail promotes educational experiences involving students and the local community, addressing themes such as biodiversity, ecological succession, soil management, and water resources. This study aimed to technically and pedagogically characterize the trail through field surveys, geoprocessing, and the application of the Mountain Sports Federation of the State of Rio de Janeiro (FEMERJ) trail classification methodology, ensuring safety criteria and proper planning of educational activities. The results indicate that the trail presents suitable conditions for field classes and has a strong potential to promote meaningful learning, environmental awareness, and the critical formation of participants. The experience reinforces agroecological principles, contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), and consolidates the trail as a strategic educational space for the development of individuals committed to socio-environmental sustainability

Agroecological transition has been recognized as an important strategy for promoting sustainable rural development, especially in territories historically marked by monoculture and socio-environmental degradation. In the Mata Sul region of Pernambuco, the predominance of sugarcane cultivation has shaped the agrarian structure and imposed significant challenges on family farming. In this context, this study aimed to analyze the challenges of the agroecological transition from the perspective of a settled family farmer who experienced the shift from conventional sugarcane cultivation to agroecological practices and, subsequently, a partial return to the sugarcane system. The research is qualitative, exploratory, and descriptive in nature, adopting a case study approach based on a semi-structured interview and content analysis. The results indicate that the initial motivation for the transition was mainly associated with formative processes, community influence, and the perception of environmental and health improvements. However, the lack of continuous technical assistance, market instability, high labor costs, and the fragility of public policies contributed to the interruption of the transition and the return to sugarcane cultivation, understood as a social reproduction strategy. It is concluded that agroecology has significant transformative potential, but its consolidation depends on favorable structural conditions

<description>Sucessão familiar: desafios e percepção da juventude no processo de produção agrícola no assentamento Bom Jardim, Barreiros – PE
Family farming establishes links between the farming family and food production. In this context, it is important to consider the inclusion of young people in the countryside in its various dimensions, highlighting the processes involving these young people and family succession in the production unit. Therefore, the objective of this study was to characterize family succession, its challenges, and the perception of youth in the agricultural production process in the Bom Jardim settlement, Barreiros – PE. Twenty interviews were conducted with young people from the Bom Jardim settlement, with managers from the municipality of Barreiros, with the president of the settlement association, and with the rural workers' union. The interviews observed aspects related to the young person's routine in the family production unit, such as coexistence, gender relations, access to education, income generation, leisure, public policies, and future prospects. Only six young people reported engaging in paid activities on their property. It was also found that 30% of those interviewed discuss the activities in the production unit with their parents and mentioned some type of division of labor based on gender. It was found that 10% of the young people reported that their parents receive some type of Technical Assistance and Rural Extension (ATER) service. Only two young people mentioned knowing about the Pronaf Jovem program, and none had access to this line of credit. Only one young woman reported having witnessed cases of violence in the area. None of the interviewees mentioned that there was garbage collection in the settlement; waste is burned, buried, or dumped into rivers. Regarding the quality of life in the rural area, 40% consider it very poor. When asked how they see themselves in the next five years, all revealed different dreams and desires related to improving their lives. Although only 20% of the young people mentioned the desire to complete high school and pursue higher education, the others plan to work in the municipality of Barreiros or elsewhere
