The open-air market of Goiana, Pernambuco, plays a key role in food supply and in the local
economy. However, it faces major challenges in managing organic waste, especially from the
commercialization of fruits, vegetables, and greens. The absence of an effective selective
collection system and the inadequate disposal of this waste lead to significant environmental,
sanitary, and social impacts, in addition to overburdening the landfill and reducing its lifespan.
In this context, the general objective of this research was to analyze a sustainable alternative
for managing the organic waste generated at the Goiana market, in accordance with the
principles of the National Solid Waste Policy (Law No. 12.305/2010). As a solution, the
implementation of a composting yard was proposed, using the method developed by the Federal
University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), which applies static piles with passive aeration—
characterized by low cost, simple operation, high efficiency, and strong potential for replication
in similar urban contexts. The project was designed based on the guidelines of the Foundation
for Research and Innovation Support of the State of Santa Catarina (FAPESC, 2017) and the
technical recommendations of Inácio and Miller (2009). The methodology combined qualitative
and quantitative approaches, with an exploratory character and field study. Techniques included
bibliographic review, document analysis, systematic observation, field visits, and discussion
groups with market vendors. Data collection took place through technical visits to the
Secretariat of General Maintenance, Supply and Public Services, as well as on-site visits to the
market. The analysis considered practices of waste generation, disposal, and management,
along with the characterization of vendors and the physical infrastructure of the market. The
final stage consisted of developing an executive project with technical and operational
guidelines for the implementation of the composting yard, tailored to the local reality. Results
showed that 62.5% of the 40 interviewed vendors are adult women working in trade,
highlighting the female protagonism in the market context. It was also identified that around
70% of the waste generated is organic, averaging 2,400 kg per week. Most of this waste is
improperly discarded, causing impacts such as soil and groundwater contamination, greenhouse
gas emissions, proliferation of disease vectors, and obstruction of urban drainage systems. The
technical analysis demonstrated that, when properly treated, the market’s organic waste can
generate between 1,020 kg and 1,700 kg of compost per cycle for each pile. Based on these
findings, a technical project was developed, including pile sizing, drainage system, operational
management, reuse of leachate as biofertilizer, and strategies for the allocation of the organic
compost. The material can be applied in public squares, urban agriculture, and community
projects, strengthening the circular economy. The proposal contributes to mitigating
environmental impacts, reducing landfill burden, fostering environmental education, and
promoting sustainable development, generating social, economic, and ecological benefits for
the municipality of Goiana

Sustentabilidade em movimento: uma abordagem para a gestão ambiental em empresas de transporte e logística no setor da construção civil
The transport and logistics sector plays an essential role in the country's economic development,
promoting efficiency and sustainability in production chains. However, the construction of
logistics bases, directly associated with civil construction, generates significant environmental
impacts that require effective management for mitigation. Civil construction is widely
recognized for its high environmental impacts, which makes the search for solutions that
balance economic development and environmental responsibility indispensable. This study
aimed to develop strategies for reference and implementation of environmental management in
transport and logistics companies during their construction stage, based on the practical
experience of a company located in the municipality of Goiana, Pernambuco. The methodology
included a scientometric analysis focused on the intersection between sustainability and the
construction sector, in addition to the elaboration of a practical guide to environmental
management using the Canva platform, aimed at professionals and companies in the field,
facilitating adaptation to the operational specificities of each organization. The scientometric
analysis used the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) database and revealed 20,688
publications related to construction and sustainability between 2014 and 2024. Of these, 10,469
were technical articles, with EL-ADAWAY, I.H. being the most relevant author. Asia stood out
as the region with the highest scientific productivity (51.5%), while Brazil, of the 69
publications found, 43.5% were articles and 30.4% case studies. After refinement, 44 Brazilian
publications aligned with the research objective were classified into thematic axes, including
water (23), climate action (3), certifications (1), sustainable cities (3), performance of the built
environment (2), energy efficiency and renewable energy (2), effluents (3), solid waste (4) and
risk management and management systems (3). Based on the thematic axes identified, the topics
of solid waste management, water management, effluent management, climate agenda and
environmental licensing were selected for the practical guide. This basic guide to environmental
management aims to guide transport and logistics companies to integrate sustainable practices
during the construction stages, promoting environmental compliance and reducing impacts. The
results show that, although there is a growing alignment between environmental management
practices and global sustainability requirements, significant challenges persist, both in academic
production and in practical implementation in companies. Thus, this research contributes to the
advancement of the debate on sustainability in civil construction, reinforcing the strategic role
of transport and logistics companies in the adoption of innovative and environmentally
responsible practices. By proposing a practical guide, the study offers an applicable and
replicable tool to promote corporate sustainability in the sector, aligning economic
development, environmental protection and social responsibility

The complex port system has an unquestionable relevance for the country's economic
development, as it enables the maintenance of a globalized supply chain and integrates different
modes of transportation. However, ports are often highlighted for their potential negative
impact on the environment due to the nature of their operations. In order to incorporate the
environmental variable into port management, indicators have been used as metrics to monitor
environmental performance in ports. Therefore, the National Waterway Transportation Agency
(ANTAQ) created the Environmental Performance Index (IDA), aiming to assess the efficiency
and quality of environmental management in Brazilian ports through indicators. The objective
of this study was to analyze the IDA as a tool for improving the environmental management of
the seaports of Pernambuco, namely the Port of Recife and the Port of Suape. To this end, a
documentary survey was carried out, based on the main instruments of port environmental
management, such as the Local Environmental Agenda, Sustainability Reports and the
Development and Zoning Plans (PDZ) of the ports studied. The environmental management
actions developed were also mapped, verifying the degree of environmental compliance and
the proactive and voluntary practices, carrying out a diagnosis of the port's environmental
management. Furthermore, compliance with fifteen of the thirty-eight specific IDA indicators
during the period from 2012 to 2023 was analyzed. Subsequently, a questionnaire was applied
to the managers and members of the Environmental Center of the two port facilities in order to
verify, from the perspective of the employees, the challenges faced and relevant aspects of the
IDA. The study revealed that, when comparing the environmental management practices
developed by the seaports of Pernambuco with the specific indicators selected, in 2023, the Port
of Suape presented satisfactory performance for the 15 indicators, while the Port of Recife met
11 of the 15 indicators analyzed. It can be inferred, by analyzing the historical series, that the
IDA makes major contributions to improving the environmental performance of ports, by
reinforcing minimum environmental compliance criteria and proposing practices that are
disseminated internationally, such as the supply of energy to ships. Regarding the difficulties
faced by managers, they pointed out the limited financial resources allocated to the
environmental area and the insufficient number of employees linked to the Environmental
Center of the facilities. The IDA is also related to 9 of the 17 SDGs recommended by the United
Nations in 2015, namely SDGs 3, 6, 7, 9, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16, which demonstrates that by
meeting the requirements defined by ANTAQ, ports also contribute to consolidating the global
pact signed through the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development. Finally, the results obtained
through the diagnosis of port environmental management practices developed by the two ports
allowed the preparation of the “Manual of Good Practices for Port Environmental Management:
The Strategy used by the Ports of Recife and Suape in Pernambuco”, contributing to the
dissemination of knowledge about these actions to other Brazilian Port Authorities
