Starting with the publication of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in 2015 — a collaborative action plan for the following fifteen years that highlights the main challenges associated with progress and prosperity on the planet — the United Nations (UN) established the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) (Figure 01), focusing on the integration of the social, environmental, and economic dimensions. These goals encompass issues highly relevant to humanity, such as combating poverty and hunger, promoting health care, ensuring access to quality education, reducing inequalities, and addressing climate change, among others (UN, 2015).

Basic sanitation is one of the fundamental pillars for ensuring quality of life, public health, and environmental balance. However, it still represents a major challenge in many Brazilian municipalities, especially in social housing areas. This booklet was developed as an educational product of the master’s dissertation entitled “Sustainable Solutions for Sanitation Management in the Reserva da Pitanga I Residential Complex: A Proposal Based on Nature-Based Solutions (NbS)”, carried out within the Graduate Program in Environmental Management at Instituto Federal de Pernambuco.

The material aims to translate the results of academic research into practical and accessible guidelines directed toward public management, the local community, and construction professionals. It presents guidelines and examples of Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) applicable to urban contexts, such as rain gardens, permeable pavements, ecological septic systems, constructed wetlands, and floodable public squares — alternatives that combine technical efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and environmental sustainability.

More than a technical guide, this booklet seeks to promote environmental education and community engagement, encouraging the conscious use of infrastructure and strengthening public participation in sanitation initiatives. Thus, the content presented here represents not only a set of sustainable solutions, but also an invitation to reflection and collective action toward greener, healthier, and more resilient cities
