Objective: to analyze the perception of the impact caused by death and the daily life
of nurses in the hospital environment. Method: this is a narrative review with a broad
methodological approach, developed through three stages: pre-analysis; exploration
of the material and treatment of the results, carried out between the periods from 2020
to 2022. 16 references were used to always give the review. Results: the studies
presented show that occasional death has a negative impact on nurses, as they do not
accept the natural process of death, relating it to a feeling of failure, impotence, loss
and anguish, generating stress. Among the most observed strategies in coping with
death, the following can be highlighted: providing comfort to the patient; spiritual refuge;
improvement in care provided; patient terminal; give priority only to technical
procedures; psychological support for family members; avoid thoughts about the
subject and dialogues with the patient and their families; emotional support among
professionals and create distractions about the event. Final considerations: the
present study concludes the inclusion of thematic thanatology can still prepare the
professional to better deal with the death of their patients, help the beginning of their
work to understand the process of the finitude of life, promoting their individual and
professional, as well as recognition of a successful and humanized practice.
